Chairman of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili introduced the newly appointed Auditor General Giorgi Gabitashvili to the staff of the SAO.
“Today, the Parliament of Georgia elected Giorgi Gabitashvili as an Auditor General. As the former Prosecutor General, he is not new to your Office. The results of the Audit Office’s work often fall within the interests of the Prosecutor’s Office. There have been many cases identified by your Office that later received responses from the Prosecutor’s Office. The Audit Office must not be merely a controlling or punitive institution. First and foremost, an institution that provides recommendations to various public bodies on how spending systems can be structured properly and efficiently,” stated Shalva Papuashvili.
The Chairman of the Parliament remarked that Giorgi Gabitashvili’s professional experience will assist the Audit Office in its successful operations. “I am confident that under the leadership of Giorgi Gabitashvili, the State Audit Office will have the opportunity to become even more effective. The expectation of both Parliament and the Government is that we will be able to monitor the efficiency of public financial spending in real time,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
The Chairman of Parliament acknowledged the former Auditor General, Tsotne Kavlashvili, and the staff of the SAO for their work.
Giorgi Gabitashvili was approved by Parliament today for the position of Auditor General. Before this, he presented his strategic visions to the members of the Finance and Budget Committee.
As Auditor General, he listed among his priorities strengthening relations between Parliament and the SAO to improve parliamentary oversight and good governance practices; improving the process for monitoring implementation of audit recommendations, which will support audited entities in executing recommendations timely and effectively; achieving the objectives set out in the Office’s strategic plan; enhancing data analysis in public sector through innovation and modern technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring tools to prevent risks; reinforcing information technology systems and continuously ensuring professional development of staff.
